Your physician will arrange your first appointment at our center.
At that appointment, which lasts about two-and-a-half to three hours, we'll discuss your
concerns, evaluate your history, and determine which diagnostic tests are appropriate. More
information on common tests are located in the "Testing"
section of this Web site.
Once testing is complete, we'll work with you and your personal physician to develop the best
plan of care. Solutions for your dizziness or imbalance could include one or more of:
- Vestibular rehabilitation
- Balance retraining
- Pharamaceutical solutions
- Surgical solutions
- Lifestyle modifications.
Vestibular rehabilitation is conducted by a highly trained balance therapist (a physical
therapist with additional balance training). This therapist helps patients become desensitized
to movements that cause dizziness or balance problems, as well as to find ways to compensate
for injuries or deficiencies in the vestibular system. If you're referred for rehabilitation,
you and your therapist will determine the most appropriate plan and duration of care for
your condition.
Often, lifestyle changes in diet, sleep routines, and exercise can help improve symptoms, either
in isolation or along with other forms of treatment. Much less frequently, medication may improve
symptoms, while surgical solutions are an uncommon but potential solution for a few select patients.
